I am a MASSIVE animal fan. I generally feel way more comfortable being myself with animals than people - probably because I'm a bit of an idiot and like talking nonsense and animals seem okay with that. But I've always avoided a trip to Taronga Zoo because my belief is that animals should not be caged, and I thought that it couldn't be good to buy into their caging. But my friend Vijay commented this week that the animals will be caged anyway, and they might like it if someone who cares about them visits them.
So yesterday I took myself off to the zoo. It was so wonderful!!! I was there for 5 hours (I bought a season pass so I didn't have to rush through it all in one day). I didn't actually see many animals because I spent so long hanging out with the ones that I did see.
Firstly I saw some native birds. Most people walked straight by the birds because they weren't really interested. But I stood out the front of their cages for a long time, and it was so beautiful that I had tears in my eyes. I think that they appreciated being adored, and their song and dance was so beautiful. I remembered that there was a time when I would have walked straight past the native birds too. I had no idea we had birds such as "Emerald Doves" and "Rose-Crowned Fruit Doves" and that even the birds I do know have such sweetness. They were so beautiful! I'll try to get some photos next time.
Then I saw the Komodo Dragon. It looked a bit bored but then it started to move and smile and stick its tongue out.

Then on to the giraffes and zebras:
I also saw a seal show and a bird show, which were cute. And a gorilla family and a gibbon and a tamir. I went to the sun bear exhibit, but they were hiding most of the time.
I can't wait to go back again! There are so many animals that I didn't see. But I also want to go and see the same ones again. There were times when I was smiling so much my cheeks were hurting. And times I burst out laughing at their anitcs. Animals truely are so very special. I think I will have to spend a whole day just on watching the elephants. I've heard it said that elephants, whales and dolphins carry more love and light than other animals.
So I'm glad to have been given the idea that both me and the animals can benefit from a visit to Taronga, even though they are in cages.
Buzzing with thankfulness...
: )
