This weekend I left the Big Smoke to head to the hills. Went to Bellingen to visit my friend Emma and her little daughter Sammy and their pets. A dog who was part bear and part pony (Bodhi), two cats (Kailash and Fella), a turtle (Indiana), some fish and two rabbits. And lots of wild birds - kookaburras that come to the porch to eat rump steak, and lots of other birds. I was in animal heaven. Thankfully I didn't see the leeches, tics and snakes that are apparently all over the place there...
Sammy, like most chillun, likes to play. It finally dawned on me that I may not like being a mother - it is so exhausting! Even playing is just exhausting. Even when I win. And I make sure I win most of the time. I'm over always letting the kid win. Make 'em cry till they're big enough to know how to win, I say! There was also the make-up game - where I got to make Sammy look pretty and she got to make me look like a drag queen.

Emma had to sit through breakfast with me looking like that, trying to take our adult conversation seriously. All I wanted to do was break out into song over the eggs on toast, and flash my Adam's apple around.
We did lots of lovely things and the weather was perfect while it was raining in Sydney. We went for a drive and went to the river where Sammy rode Bodhi in the water. We had dinner at the local pub and lunch at the Old Butter Factory and lazed around on the porch at home. Delightful.
However I was so exhausted from all the games (uno, guess the object, spelling quiz etc etc etc) that the last half hour I was there I just had to talk to the turtle. I put my hand in his tank and danced with him. Yeah, it's been a while since I've danced with a guy but it can happen after all! He inspected my hand and I inspected his neck and shell. It was beautiful. He followed me around the tank, perhaps enjoying my company as a break from his usual community of fish. I communicated with him by ESP, but I still couldn't hear him talk back... I must keep working on that...
